Welcome to JewelrySoupJewelry Soup: Silver Necklace Jewelry Question: Silver necklace fell into a pool. What now?
I was wearing a Tiffany & Co. necklace and when I went to the pool two days ago, I went to take it off and it slipped out of my hands into the pool. I got it out and it looked like it did before. But today I went to put it on and saw that it had some nasty looking yellow spots on it. It is a silver color, but I'm not really sure what it is made out of. I got it for $12 if that helps. Now, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to try and get the color back to normal. It's my favorite necklace, and it's also my signature necklace. I can't lose it.=[
I tried putting a paste of baking powder and water on it and rubbing it with a cloth, but it didn't work. It made the yellow slightly ligther, but now it's not as shiny, so it doesn't look right.
I can't buy a new one because I got it in Baltimore (which is way far away from me), and I won't be going back there ever again. So yeahh. There goes that idea.Answer: Try cleaning it with toothpaste, the paste kind and not the ...

use same things that are used to clean silver. if it does not clean then, do not take it to the jewelry store to get it professionally cleaned, because they will take more money for it than the necklace is actually worth. if nothing helps you will have to buy another one but I think things used to clean silver will take care of it.(if it was silver or somehting like that and if it was not just gilded with silver. if it was just in small layer of silver and that came off, then theres nothign you can do) if its just a spot then you 'll be fine
good luckAnswer: it was only 12 bucks?! why not just get a new one??

First, rinse the necklace off with clean water and dry it as good as you can. This should stop whatever chemical process started when your necklace fell into the pool.
Next call the store. Describe the necklace and tell them what happened. They will be able to tell you if the necklace is silver, sterling, or just silver plated. They can also tell you if and how the finish can be restored. At this point you do not want to do anything that will further damage your necklace.
Sure, it may have only cost $12, but it is still special to you.Answer: Im sorry :(

Silly as it sounds, try buffing it with toothpaste and a soft cloth. I use this ongold wedding ring and it works great. Also, you don't have to worry about harsh chemicals and bad smellsAnswer: If it is Sterling Silver( look for the numbers 925, stamped ...
If it is Sterling Silver( look for the numbers 925, stamped somewhere on the necklace) you can try commercial silver cleaner like Tarn-x, sold in most grocery stores. Be sure to rinse the piece well before you wear it( use warm tap water, dry well) Calgon Water softener, NOT FABRIC SOFTENER works well too and is less caustic than Tarn-x.Use a plastic container; line it completely with aluminum foil, add Fabric Softener to cover the item, dip, remove, rinse. If your necklace is not genuine silver try some mild soap and water, but it may be a lost cause. Good Luck |
