Sounds like you got jibbed! Either you didn't ask the right questions, sometimes stores don't say it an itme is pure silver or plated... or it seemed to cheap to be right, and I guess it probably was! Sorry

Answer: There are a few possibilities. . . 1) You got taken. ...
There are a few possibilities. . . 1) You got taken. Someone marked it .925 and it was not really sterling silver. Make certain that any time you purchase an item with a quality mark (metal mark) that is also has a maker's mark identifying who or what company made the piece. In the United States, all pieces marked with a quality mark must also have the maker's mark--this is the company or person who is guaranteeing that the quality mark is true and accurate. 2) Instead of being marked .925, it was actually marked .925P or .925PL or .925SP or some such thing indicating it was plated instead of solid sterling silver. 3) What you are seeing is not a copper base showing through plating but rather the copper that was alloyed with fine silver to make sterling is being raised to the surface somewhat due to oxidation and probably your body chemistry. A good anti-tranishing cleaner and some polishing would take care of that problem, at least temporarily till it needed another cleaning. Because sterling silver is most often made by alloying fine silver with a small amount of copper, the tarnishing/oxidation process can at times produce a coppery-look to a sterling piece. Try a cleaner and see what happens. If indeed the piece is not sterling but you really like it, any jeweler can easily and inexpensively replate the piece for you. Good luck.
