Google it... there are whole websites devoted to spotting fakes. But here are some basics... is it heavy? Rolexes are heavy. Are the links on the band nice and tight? Rolexes are pretty well-put together, and a counterfiet usually has a chintzy band. Does the second hand tick, or does it sweep (the "perpetual" movement, they call it)? Rolex's signature, proprietary mechanism is the sweeping perpetual. Some more expensive fakes now have this, but most of them still tick.

The best way to determine whether or not a Rolex is real is: 1) Determine where it was purchased. Only authorized Rolex Dealers can sell and/or repair Rolex. I don't know if there is a Lions, Ltd. in your area, but I know that they are a authorized dealer. You can bring it there and they will definitely tell you. I dated a professional athlete and he had a Rolex Perpetual (actually a beautiful watch) and a Rolex Cellini (guess, it was nice because it said Rolex...I woudn't buy it) they were both services at Lions, Ltd. 2) Rolex does not tick...they use chronometer testing on all Rolexes. The movement of the second hand of a Rolex is perpetual. If you don't have COSC papers or seal with your Rolex it may not be real. Hope this helps.

I don't mean that as a slam to anyone but if you're in a clothing store and your 20 something clerk is sporting a gold Rolex you can figure it's not a real one. People who wear multi thousand dollar watches usually have occupations to match the watch. Again, not trying to sound elitist but it's simple economics. If a person's job, income, car, dress don't match the watch, you can bet it's a fake. It's difficult to fake your car or home but even the poorest poseur can find a fake Rolex. Now, if your question was about verifying a Rolex you are thinking of purchasing, ask the seller to meet you at a an authorized dealer, if he has a fake, he won't show up. If he doesn't know it's a fake then the dealer can tell him and save you a bad experience. As far as being able to tell from advice you receive here, be careful. Rolex do indeed tick, 8 beats per second to be exact, the hands move smoothly rather than the hesitation you see with a quartz, unless it's a Rolex quartz, yes they made one of those. My point is, you must have any Rolex verified prior to purchase by an expert, anything less is foolish.

Begin by researching locally, ask your authorized dealer if they have any used ones or do they know where you might find one locally. Hang around some of the Rolex forums on the net to become familiar with the various models and learn where the reliable internet sellers are. Main point is, take your time. A Rolex will last you your lifetime with care so don't be in a hurry to get one.

well you probs could, but would have to remove the caseback, then all the insides, take the hands off, take the original dial off, put the new dial on, etc etc... Its not as easy as it sounds either even with the proper tools and equipment. even if you manage to do it, it would be fairly obvious its not a real rolex anyway. there are many types of hands for watches and rolex, omega, breitling, tag etc all have very distinct hands, would also need the original "donor" watch to have a sweeping second hand aswell. Surely it would be alot easier just to buy a rolex and keep the other watch in one piece.

I was handed the fake rolex and asked for a quote to repair to which I replied, "i can fix the watch but wont guarantee it as its a fake", he argued it was a real rolex so I quoted him gb£200 to repair, he then decided it was a fake and could I do it for £20. the whole thing was cheap and nasty, and so was the watch. is this how you want to come across?

If it only just stopped working it may not need an overhaul, maybe just a few new parts. Find a local place dedicated to mechanical watch sales/repair; they will be able to replace the crystal & bezel, as well as tell you what needs to be done repair-wise with the motion. What may have happened is when the crystal & bezel were damaged, part of the seal may have been broken, allowing moisture or particles in to gum up the works. It's definitely worth your time and money to repair it, old Rolexes are great. You might want to ask for help here too: http://www.watchnet.com/
