Yes, believe it or not, rubbing them across your teeth (a chance to smile at the Jeweler) is a good way to tell quality. On the other hand, an excellent way to ALSO tell is to see how they are strung. If they are knotted (between each pearl is a tiny knot), and the clasp seems of good quality (not flimsy, doesn't unhook easily), then you've got a good set.

Pearls w/silver detailing will match pretty much any prom dress that you would get. (Just not gold)... I would go with a classic color such as black and then get some silver strappy sandals to wear. Black is always in and it flatters any body type.

first off, you should buy the dress and then accessories to match. but since these are pearls with silver detailing, just about anything will match colorwise. stylewise, pearls are very elegant and classy so go for a dress with that same kind of feel to it. I would probably stray away from something too flirty since the styles might clash. but, then again, if you get the perfect flirty dress, the two styles might complement each other well. I would bring the necklace with you when you go shopping and find all the dresses that feel work with it. if youre not sure, you can always ask a friend to come with you for a second opinion or ask one of the sales associates if you go to a specialty store like jessica McClintock. they are there to help you so they can a dress that great for your body and will match well.
