Question: Price check on pearl necklaces?

I bought a semi-golden pearl necklace from India. 8mm all perfectly round pearls. 16.5 inches long with a 24k clasp. I can not find any place that carries these kind of pearl neckalces. One of my friends saw it and said to get it insured but I need a good estament on what the retail price would be. Any help would be great. I'm sorry, I won't be able to help with the pricing of that beautiful necklace. Try going to a jeweler, be careful with this, they might not always tell the truth. Your second option is looking someone up, either on the internet or phone book that would know these kinds of things and give you the right price. Sorry I wasn't much help. Have a good day.

This is probably not exactly what you wanted to hear, but I would suggest NOT insuring the piece. It is very difficult to see the picture clearly, but from the picture and your description, this much I can tell you. The necklace is not a golden South Sea strand. South Sea pearls are rarely as small as 8.0 mm, and when they are they will be "end" pearls on a graduated strand. I think it is also important to point out that this strand is not 8.0 mm. It has 72 pearls. An 8.0 mm strand will have 50-52 pearls. Your strand is 16.5 inches, so the largest the pearls could be is in the 6.0 mm range. A few of the pearls do not appear to be perfectly round in the photo. If this is the case the strand is freshwater. If it is, the strand is dyed. The strand may be akoya. But based on your description, it is not of great value. Yellow is a dyed color for the most part, and is applied low-grade pearls. Lastly, the strand may be fake. You mention (albeit mistakenly) that the size is exact. This is never the case with pearls, but often the case with fakes. The fact that the strand is not knotted also lends weight to the "fake" argument, as they are rarely knotted. However, it could still be a low-grade akoya or freshwater, as these are not usually knotted either. If freshwater, the strand would wholesale for $5-$15, and retail for around $100. If akoya, the strand would wholesale for $50-$100, and retail for $250-$500. If the strand is fake ...

Question: When I was in Asia I saw necklaces advertised as cultured pearl necklaces but the pearls were an inch?

"Cultured Pearl" simply means that it was grown in a mollusk on a pearl farm. There are many freshwater pearls on the market that are much less expensive than Akoya, or even South Sea pearls. These are all formed in different mollusk. The size of the mollusk will determine the size of the pearl. Anything that is that inexpensive that is being called a cultured pearl would more than likely be freshwater. Freshwater pearls tend to be inexpensive, in part because one freshwater mollusk (a mussell) can yield up to 50 pearls. A freshwater pearl could never be 25 mm (or the inch you described). In fact, the only pearls that can get to be that size would be South Sea or Tahitian, like are the expensive ones that you are thinking about from Australia. With all this in mind, these particular pearls were "fake."
