a black scoop neck would look great. no bracelets or fancy earrings, that will be too much. I, personally, would wear cute dark jeans with the black top, but if you want to wear a skirt or something to dress it up, that would look cute too. Keep your make up really natural, too. With pretty lip gloss. =) Have a great nighhttt!

Pearls go with everything: sweaters, dresses, blouses, etc. Do you have a cashmere sweater or a V neck blouse or dress? Take good care of your pearls. Always use hair spray and perfume or cologne before you put it on because they will damage pearls. You may have to have them restrung every year or two. Clean them by wiping them with a damp cloth, nothing more. Enjoy them and wear them as often as you can.

Are you sure she doesn't want the type of pearl necklace ZZ top was talkin' about?

Answer: First, do your research before heading out. There are many ...
First, do your research before heading out. There are many types and styles of pearl jewelry available and the educated buyer will always get the better deal. Freshwater Pearls These are typically the least expensive variety of cultured pearl. Most freshwater pearls you see will be off round to baroque, and the luster will be medium. There are high-end freshwater pearls like "freshadama" or gem grade, but these are difficult to find. Most boutiques carry very low-end freshwater pearls for as little as a few dollars per strand. http://www.pearl-guide.com/freshwater-pearls.shtml Akoya Pearls These are the classic, white, round cultured pearls that you will find at the higher-end jewelry stores. The luster of a quality akoya strand will be bright and reflective. But learn what to look for in an akoya strand before going out to buy one. If the pearls do not have adequate nacre (the pearl layering over the mother of pearl nucleus) the pearls will not last. Look for cracking around the drill hole and any chalkiness. http://www.pearl-guide.com/akoya-pearls.shtml Tahitian Pearls These are the exotic dark pearls also known as black South Sea pearls. They are typically large and can be very expensive. The surface, shape, size and luster all play a part in value. http://www.pearl-guide.com/black-tahitian-pearls.shtml South Sea pearls These are the most expensive of all cultured pearls. The highest-end strands can cost more than $1 million. Mikimoto in Beverly Hills, for example, currently has a strand of South Sea pearls selling for $1.6 million. http://www.pearl-guide.com/south-sea-pearls.shtml Before venturing out do some online research at vendor sites around the web. Pearl-Guide.com is an excellent source of information, but you can price different types of pearls out and learn about quality by visiting retail Web sites. Of course online prices will be much lower than in a brick and mortar jewelry store. Check a few of the following: PearlParadise.com PearlsofJoy.com ThePearlOutlet.com PurePearls.com BeMyPearl.com

take it to a certified jeweler to be safe but here are some ways you can get an idea your self take your pearls out into the sun or holding them under very bright indoor lighting. Unless they are very expensive, genuine pearls won't be perfectly matched under the sun. You will be able to see variations in their iridescence (orient) and color. If the pearls are perfectly matched for color and overtones, they are most probably fake Fakes tend to look 'flat' in comparison to the real thing. There are exceptions, of course, with beautiful simulated pearls made by Swarovski and other manufacturers. Real pearls tend not to be perfect and may have bands in their nacre, bumps, ridges, or pits. They vary in size and shape from one to another. Genuine pearls may have concentric ridged circles around them, which inexperienced people may take for marks from molding of a fake (which is seen in the exact middle of all the pearls on strands of some faux pearls). Real pearls come in many shapes, but they tend not to be perfectly round, so a perfect sphere should be suspect. Expensive genuine pearls may be round, but you will have other clues to help you make a determination. Some fakes are made to look irregular, and glass pearls often have flattened ends or slightly oval shapes. In addition to visual clues, genuine pearls tend to warm to the skin much faster than glass pearls. Resin or plastic pearls tend to feel somewhat warm upon first contact. Density is the mass of an object as a function of its volume. Real pearls are heavier for their size than plastic, resin, or hollow glass pearls. Good glass fakes will have the same density are real pearls. Light pearls are fake - you can't tell real from faux on the basis of density alone if the pearls are heavy.

Real pearls feel gritty or sandy whereas fake ones are smooth. Real pearls feel heavy to hold, fake ones are light. Most real pearls have minimal flaws, fake ones are normally absolutely flawless. It tells you how to check if pearls are real or fake on the link ;) I hope they turn out to be real for you :)

Why not show them to your parents and tell them from where you found it. They might know. If not, then take it to a jewelry store.

Answer: The easiest way to determine whether a strand of pearls is ...
The easiest way to determine whether a strand of pearls is genuine or fake is by the tooth test. Pearls are composed of calcium carbonate platelets that are laid one on top of another like scales. The ridges can be felt with your tooth. Take the pearl and something made of plastic. It is easiest to have something that is certainly 'not' a pearl to compare. Rub the plastic item against the front edge of a front tooth. The plastic will slide easily and smoothly. Next, do the same thing with the pearl. If the pearl is a fake it will feel like the plastic. If the pearl is genuine the difference will be black and white. The pearl will feel somewhat like very fine sandpaper in comparison. If the pearl is real strand, the next step is to determine what kind of pearl it is. If it is something you "found in a box", it is likely a freshwater strand, or possibly an akoya strand. If the pearls are off-round with no symmetry - often shaped like a potato - the strand is freshwater. If the pearls are perfect round to very near round, they are likely akoya.

Question: Pearl necklace for girlfriend: tight or loose?
I'm going to buy a pearl necklace for my girlfriend for our one year anniversary. The question I have is, should I buy her a necklace that's more of a choker style or one that hangs loose by a few inches? She's seventeen and a junior in high school. What is the fashionable look for pearls for a girl her age? She's already dropped the hint a couple times that she wants pearls, so I'm sure I'm heading in the right direction. Also, I didn't really mean "choker", I simply meant a tighter style.

Get something that's just a little bit looser than a choker, but not too long and drapy... a lot of girls are wearing super long beaded necklaces these days, but I think that for something expensive and classy like pearls, something shorter would be better.

1 question why pearls for a 17yr old? Thats an odd gift, usually its like a silver neclace or something. ( it would probably be cool looking if she was into artsy stuff) Well I would have to say if I had to choose the cooler of the 2 would be choker style but you would have to really see how she likes to wear jewlery normally. If she wears choker style already than you have your answer but If you're super unsure I would go at a length somewhere between the 2.

Answer: The best length for a one strand pearl necklace should be ...
The best length for a one strand pearl necklace should be one resting at the base of her neck, very classic but still modern. Droopy is too old and can't really wear it dressed up with all the different dresses' necklines. And if you want to buy a choker, it should be multiple strands to add a dramatic effect (as in Breakfast at Tiffany's opening).
