There is a forum online that many beaders and pearl "people" hang out on every day (myself included). One particular part of the forum is dedicated to stringing. It is called "the lowly beaders' club". There are threads such as "Tools and Supplies for Beading and Knotting", and "Attaching Clasps". If you are a "handy" person you should be able to learn as much as you need to know to do a good job on your friend's necklace. If you get stuck the forum is the perfect place to ask questions.
