Jewelry Soup: How To Know Whether Jewelry Is Fake Or Real?

Question: What can I do if somebody sold me a ring that they told me was real but its just fake costume jewelry?
Bought a ring off ebay and was told that is was solid 14K gold and genuine stones but it turns out that it is metal and man made stones. Paypal can get my money back for me but I want this guy to get in more trouble than that. Its the whole moral of the thing, ya know. Anybody have any suggestions on whether I can sue this guy or what I can do?????? I dont think they are going to refund me my money.

Contact the authorities and ask them. (Not 911, though. It /is/ an emergency number.) I don't think you could sue, though, because you bought it off the internet, and it's very easy to lie.

You can't. Which is why you should be very careful before buying or selling any. And it is also why you might as well buy a cubic zirconium. There's no real way to tell the difference unless you're a jeweler, and you won't go into debt buying a 4000 dollar ring.

1.With diamonds, they have a "pen" like device that tests the hardness of the surface. 2. Fake gold will turn your finger green. Also, you can carefully scrape a small spot and view with a magnifying glass to see whats underneath. 3. Fake Rolexs will tic if you put it up to your ear. Doesnt matter if the second hand still roles...if you hear it tick, its a Folex!

Answer: A metal that is gold/silver will usually have a stamp on it ...
A metal that is gold/silver will usually have a stamp on it indicating what quality it is (eg sterling silver, 14k gold, 10k gold). You won't normally encounter actual FAKE jewellery that has stamps pretending it's real precious metals, though it is possible... With gemstones, it's really subtle. Some fake gemstones are very convincing, and only a jeweler could really tell the difference.

Answer: Sterling silver will tarnish and on some people it tarnishes ...
Sterling silver will tarnish and on some people it tarnishes quickly due to body chemistry, but on others it may never tarnish. Another test for sterling silver is an acid test done by a jeweler. The best way to see if it is real karat gold is to have it tested. That means an acid test or a test using one of the newer electronic gold testers some jewelers use. That is what I would recommend.

Answer: There are many types of jewelry. For gold, as everyone has ...
There are many types of jewelry. For gold, as everyone has said if it tarnishes or turns your skin colors, the same goes for silver. Also those two metals are known for being easy to wear, with only a few people being allergic to them, so if your skin gets itchy or red its probable fake. And real gold must have the carat printed on it, its the law, it will be 10, 14 or 18, if it says 12 kart its fake!! Also sometimes there is 22 carat but that's only in Asia. Next, pearls. I love this test, bit it, no hard but grind your teeth on it. If its smooth then its fake, but if its gritty them its real. Diamonds are not like crystals. They do not reflect all the colors like prisms, so if your "diamond" does create colors like crystals do its fake. Also if there are any scratches in its surface, it fake because diamonds are the hardest rocks. Hope that helps, if all else fails take it to a jewelry store and the jeweler can quickly tell you if it's real, probable for free if your nice.

Question: Real/Fake Jewelry-- How to tell?
I bought a lot of antique jewelry at an auction. Some appears to be real, some definitely fake/costume. However, there are a few pieces where it is honestly hard to tell. They may be real or good quality fakes. How can I tell? If I take it to a jewelry store, will they be able to tell? Will they charge me for the assessment? I don't care if it is real or not because I like it, but if it is real, it probably needs to be insured. Thanks for all help.

Answer: You can probably tell by the price of it.

Answer: Check with your insurance company. Most have a jewelry ...
Check with your insurance company. Most have a jewelry assessor who will assess at a nominal fee. The couple of hundred you might have to pay will be more than worth the money, believe me...even some costume jewelry can be valuable. Years ago, husband bought a guitar at a pawnshop. To "sweeten" the deal, a pearl necklace was thrown in. I always assumed it was fake, although a very good one. I had that appraised this year and it's worth $1800. I've been wearing it for years with t-shirts. Needless to say, even though I still wear it with t-shirts, I now have it insured appropriately and have had it restrung.

Answer: Doesn't fake jewellery toon your skin green? ...
Doesn't fake jewellery toon your skin green? That's the only way I know that you usually tell.. and I don't know if that's 100% of the time. I don't see any problem in taking the jewellery into a jeweller's and seeing if they'll assess it for you. Ask them if they can find whether or not it's fake for free. There may be a charge but I doubt it -- and if you get charged for it it should only be a pittance anyhow. Do you have any friend's that are jewellers or work in a jewellery store or anything? You could ask them to survey your jewellery if you like. Hope this helps! Good luck! MaybeLater_x

Sounds to me like you are about to be addicted to collecting Antique and Vintage Jewelry in which case you'll like this link http://www.guyotbrothers.com/jewelry-finding-questions/faq26.htm In many cases there is no way of telling, but "real" jewelry usually has some kind of mark identifying the quality of the metal IE 14kt, 24 kt, SS, .925, 375, Plat etc.
