Jewelry Soup: How To Know Whether Jewelry Is Fake Or Real?

Question: How to preserve fake jewelry?
I have several rings that I like a lot and wear often, but they are not real. I'm honestly not sure exactly what they're made of, but they have a silver finish, and the ones where the finish has started to wear off look pink or reddish underneath. My question is, is there any way to preserve artificial jewelry like these rings to keep them from wearing down and eventually turning my fingers green? For example, is there anything I could buy to apply to the rings to prevent this or just to prolong the life of the finish? I know the "simple" solution would be to buy real rings, but that's not in my budget, and besides, I really love these rings even if they are fake. Thanks for your help!!

The most economical and effective method which has always worked for me is to apply clear nail polish onto the item. By doing this you are applying a protective coat that will prevent your skin from turning green, also the nail polish makes the item look shinier at the same time

"Silver has a lustrous white color but needs polishing occasionally because silver reacts with sulfur in the air to cause tarnishing..." so I still apply a separation film is a best and easy way to stop tarnish.Or,u don't do precaution but take it to jeweler to re-polish it regularly.

this may or may not answer your question, but tyra banks had a topic about how to spot a fake. there are tons of items that you can purchase that looks like the real thing. most ppl aren't trying to buy fake things, instead they are fooled into believing that what they have purchased is real but only cheap. im sure you can find things online that resemble what you want. just have to look around. just dont expect the best quality because the materials will not be the same, and the product probably wont last as long either.

I used to work at a jewelry store. On costume jewelry, they use several metals. Antiquing is a blackish finish that is applied popularly to class rings and certain necklaces. On other pieces, they use a plating material that looks like a gold or silver color. That's why when you purchase it there is usually a "gold plated" or "gold over sterling silver" label. In order to make sure it is REAL, there must be a stamp on it that says 10k, 14k, 18k or if it's silver it will be stamped with the number 925.
