Jewelry Soup: How To Clean Jewelry

Question: How to clean old acrylic costume jewelry?
oh, what a score I found at the antique store! old acrylic (lucite, bakelite?) strung necklaces & bracelets, funky earrings, and a TON of plastic bangles. So much is so very lovely and i'm just itching to make things out of it, but lots of it is dirty, with a sticky dust like film on it. anyone know how I can clean the film of without damaging the beads that seem to be painted acrylic? they're so lovely and light weight, perfect for chunky bracelets and earrings, but i'm scared i'll destroy them :( any advice?

Unless it is marked, it is probably not sterling. Did you use a cleaner specifically for Silver? Don't worry, you can always have it re-plated by a Jeweler for $15 - $25. All White Gold and Silver Jewelry is Rhodium plated. Wishing you the very best, Psyche

Simichrome Polish, I swear by it! Simichrome Polish quickly brings any metal to a high shine and retards tarnishing by leaving a thin protective coating. It removes heavy tarnish and polishes silver, chrome, aluminum, gold, stainless steel, pewter, and magnesium. Car and motorcycle owners use it to polish wheels, tailpipes, bumpers, and many other metal parts. Antique dealers use it on both plated and solid sterling silverware to quickly remove even black tarnish. Simichrome is non abrasive so it won't harm the metal. I use it often inline of work. It is a lifesaver! You can find it on-line, or usually in stores that sell car and motorcycle parts. Wishing you the very best, Psyche

Answer: Caring for your Jewelry is always a must! When I buy a piece ...
Caring for your Jewelry is always a must! When I buy a piece of Jewelry I clean it and then put it inJewelry Box. This is important because dust can damage Gemstones. Then, I only clean them after I wear them. Twice a year I will go through and clean / inspect allJewelry. I try not to over clean them because all White Gold and Sterling Silver Jewelry is Rhodium Plated, which can wear over time. Sterling Silver tends to wear faster than White Gold. Depending upon the piece of Jewelry, it can cost between $15 - $50 to have them re-plated. Also, be mindful that some chemicals and other elements can damage Gemstones. Below I have included a link to a Gemstone Care Chart. It has helped me so much through the years. Wishing you the very best, Psyche
