Answer: If you want to get rid of black tarnish from silver try ...
If you want to get rid of black tarnish from silver try this. Get some aluminum foiland put it in the bottom of a lagish bowl. Mix up some baking soda in water. Thin solution not paste. Pour it into the bowl and add your jewelry, silver ware or whatever. Your silver must be touching the aluminum. The tarnish on silver is actually a silver sulfer compound and an electrolytic chemical reaction starts. The sulfer comes away from the silver wich reforms to itself and the sulfer binds to the aluminum turning it black instead. It is a very safe reaction and there is no wearing away of the silver so it is even good for silver plate. It will work with an old bare aluminum pot as the bowl if you don't have foil handy. You just can't have any teflon or other coating in the pot it must be bare aluminum. There is no scrubbing involved. a quick rinse and dry after the reaction is finished and presto, shiny silver.

Connoisseurs Silver Jewelry Cleaner ROCKS. You dip your silver jewelry in, swish it around, the tarnish comes off. No rubbing, polishing, anything required. We sell it at the jewelry store I work at. http://www.spacesavers.com/silvercleaner.html Connoisseurs also makes a gold cleaner, which we also sell. DO NOT put your silver jewelry in gold cleaner, it will turn black irreversably. Likewise, do not put your gold in silver cleaner. This also goes for in one of the above postings, silver should not be put into a sonic cleaner.

The best way to clean jewelry is to take it to a jewelry store where they have an ultra-sonic cleaning machine and a steam cleaner. Many will do this free of charge. The best way at home to clean jewelry is to make a solution: - 1 part ammonia (you can even use windex that has ammonia in it) - 3 parts warm water. Then take an old, soft toothbrush and scrub the jewelry with that solution. Then rinse it and pat dry with a towel. Just make sure the jewelry is only gold and diamonds - certain gemstones such as pearls you have to be very careful when cleaning.

Most silver cleaners are designed to remove oxidation that causes silver to tarnish. White gold is more pure in form and will not tarnish due to oxidation. Most silver cleaners will not hurt gold of any color but you wont get the best cleaning results. Try using a toothbrush and liquid laundry detergent in hot water and cleaning your gold with that...works as good as most!
