Jewelry Soup: How To Clean Jewelry

Question: jewelry cleaner and eye glass cleaner?
one day just on a whim I cleaned my wedding ring with my eye glass solution and it cleaned up nicely and sparkled like it does when I clean it with jewelry cleaner. I'm just wondering if it's the same dang thing? however I haven't dared clean my glasses with jewlery cleaner.

It's not exactly the same thing, but very similar. The solution for your eyeglasses is probably even more gentle because they don't want any chemicals to stay on, as it might irritate the eye. And no, don't clean your glasses with the jewelery cleaner, it's not meant for you glasses. If it's the other way around (using the eyeglass cleaner for jewelery, then it's okay.)

Question: silver jewelry turned black when clean in gold jewelry cleaner will it turn back silver with silver cleaner?

Answer: Unfortunately, no. Silver and gold/platinum jewelry ...
Unfortunately, no. Silver and gold/platinum jewelry cleaners are made of different chemicals and are not interchangeable...meaning the chemicals in gold/platinum jewelry cleaner will interact with silver jewelry. The black you are seeing is a surface chemical reaction; no matter how bad it looks I assure you it is not ruined. That is the good news. The not so great news is that there is no home remedy to restore your silver- it must be professionally buffed. The blackness on the surface of the silver must be very delicately buffed on with professional tools. Call any reputable silver jeweler in your area and ask them what they charge for professional buffing/polishing...the type to remove scratches. I am certain with this process that your jewelry will be just fine...just don't try any more at-home methods. Next time, only use silver cleaner for your silver jewelry.

Question: Ladies....Jewelry cleaner?
My mom told me this years ago and, as I am cleaning my jewelry today, I am once again amazed at how awesome this tip was: Regular cleaning ammonia poured into a plastic container and allow your jewelry to soak in it for a couple of mins. I use the lemon ammonia (yellow), it turns green as it lifts off whatever is dulling my jewelry. You wouldn't believe the difference and the SHINE! Anyone else tried it? Anyone else have other things they use that puts store bought jewlery cleaners to shame? The ammonia seems to work better on gold metal than on silver, but it doesn't do so bad on silver either. It's AWESOME on the gold. Anyone have other common agents that works good on silver? Should I tell Heloise??? lol Not sure if I would try it on anything really expensive but, then again, it doesn't seem it would be too harsh. You can get your jewelry even brighter by buffing it with a paper towel when you remove it from the ammonia!

Yeah, I do that too but pure ammonia can be kind of hard on your jewelry. Mix 1 part ammonia, 2 parts water, and a drop of dish soap. Let soak and then rub clean. Works wonderfully! Something that works well on silver jewelry (surprisingly enough) is toothpaste! Extra whitening works the best. :)

Amonia works great for shiney diamonds! Sparkley!!!! Use gloves and an old toothbrush to loosen the lotion and skin built up in between the diamonds and other tiny places. This obviously will not get the scratchs out of the gold, but a jeweler can polish those out! Good luck. xx

There are two options, the first, take a little aluminium foil and put it in a saucepan. Put a bit of water inside to kind of bowl shape the foil makes as well as underneath it in the pot. Into the aluminium bowl put a good shake of baking soda and put it on the stove. The baking soda gently and thoroughly cleans the metal. After it's been ' boiled' it will look a tad cloudy and dull, just give it a rinse and if you have an old toothbrush a little scrub too, then dry it off on a nice fluffy towel. The only caveat though is if there are stones in your jewelry it'll damage the clarity. The other option take an old tube sock and cut off the toes and the tube and cut down the side of it so you have a square of fuzzy sock material. Use this to rub vigourously ( I mean really vigourously) all over your wedding ring, it'll gently polish it. Like you wouldn't believe!!!

Question: Can you use a sterling silver ring with cubic zirconia in jewelry cleaner?
I bought a sterling silver ring with a green CZ gem, and I'm wondering if it'd be safe to use it in jewelry cleaner.

It depends on the jewelry cleaner. If it is a sonic cleaner, then yes. However, if the cleaner has soap or detergent in it, then I don't recommend it. This can cloud the cubic zirconia. Your best bet is to purchase a silver polishing cloth to polish the stone and silver.
