if you have some alka seltzer around just test it by dipping a penny in it. then look closely to see if there is any damage. I design, make and sell jewelry using pearls, austrian crystals, and silver. I have found that Walmart, at the jewelry country) has a specific liquid cleaner for each. I tried them all and found that the one for pearls and other delicates cleans them quite well. do not use the cream polish because no matter what you'll never get all of the paste off the jewelry. ANOTHER BIG HINT. do not and I mean do not, put a jewelry cleaner in a metal container - it will eat away at everything. use a glass container. and just do a few pieces at a time so that you can rinse and dry them as soon as you take them out of the cleaner. major boo boo on me - I had approximately 4,000.00 worth of silver which I had seperated in the metal cupcake pans. I work best when I am sitting on the floor so I can see everything at one time. once the phone rang, it was an emergency so I just left, uponreturn I found that I had sloshed some of the cleaner into the metal cups and it had completely destroyed it - it just crumbled inhands when I was trying to get it out.
and another thing. don't forget to clean your earrings (eespecially the post ones) every now and then - you'd be surprised at how dirty and nasty smelling they can get.Question: How do clean antique and costume jewelry?

How to Clean Antique Jewelry
Maintaining the luster and appeal of your antique jewelry is probably important to you, especially if your jewelry holds sentimental or monetary value. Some methods for jewelry cleaning can be harsh on precious metals and stones, even causing them to be stained or dulled in appearance. Cleaning your antique jewelry can be fairly easy when you follow a few simple steps.
Instructions
Steps
1Step OneGrab a soft, unused toothbrush or a very soft, clean, unused cloth. The softer the better.
2Step TwoApply a small amount of window cleaner, mild soapy water or a solution formulated for cleaning jewelry to the cloth or toothbrush.
3Step ThreeStroke your jewelry gently with your toothbrush or soft cloth and remove all visible dirt. Use a damp cotton swab or your soft toothbrush for hard-to-reach places.
4Step FourLeave your jewelry out to dry for at least an hour after you've cleaned them.Answer: I used to work for a lady that specialized in costume ...
I used to work for a lady that specialized in costume jewelry from days of yore....she told me that she used a non-abrasive tooth paste and rinse with distilled water.......but the real truth is, that if it is antique, true antique, you don't clean them at all --it takes the patina off it and the resale value is less.Answer: Try something gentle like joy or palmolive dish washing ...

The best way to clean gold jewelry is with a jeweler-recommended cleaning solution or with an ultrasonic machine. A solution of mild detergent, warm water, and a small amount of ammonia can also be used. After cleaning and rinsing, dry and polish with a chamois or other soft cloth.Answer: Mild soap and water. Mild soap and water. I am not kidding. Gold and diamonds do not stain, and so any dirt or alien chemical cannot stick to them. Hence, just soap and water will do the best job. Another way is to dip the gold/diamond in boiling water. If your jeweller was not the best, the boiling water will loosen the gold/diamond in the metal setting. If this happens, you were robbed. If you were robbed in the setting, you might have been robbed in the quality of the gold/diamond itself.Answer: meths is good for cleaning jewellery.
