Unfortunately, that is was gold plated jewelry does. Which by the way comes from wearing the piece a lot. And gold filled is the term meaning how much gold was infused/applied. For example a gold plated necklace that says it is 12k gold filled means it was overlayed with the gold over lets say brass, but instead of just the very thin layer of gold normally used on gold plated, you actually got a little more gold, 1/20 in weight which is the 12k gold overlay expression you will hear. Would I buy gold plated jewelry? Yes. Why? Because there are pieces I've found over the years so beautiful and I know in real 14k or 18k gold I could not afford it. Also, it is very good to have as your jewelry when going out and you want to impress but it cost less. Many African, Indian, and Middle Easterners use this kind of jewelry for special occasions as their "real" jewelry must be guarded in social settings. Which may explain why this jewelry is popular among celebrities. So if they can wear imposters overlayed in gold, ie gold plated, then why can't we. (I know, I know they rent and borrow real jewelry, but sometimes.....) Remember your fine department stores carry a nice selection too, such as Macy's, Norstroms, Saks, Neiman Marcus, and JCPenneys.
