It depends on the style. If the ring has a lot of stones then it could be very costly to have it down sized as the stones need to be removed and the ring pretty much re-made. If you do end up purchasing it, be sure to tell them you want the gold that they remove.

Answer: Not with white gold, but with yellow gold you can. 24K Gold ...
Not with white gold, but with yellow gold you can. 24K Gold (99.9% pure gold) is yellow, there is no such thing as 24K White gold. To get white gold, they add zinc & nickel (to give it its silver color)...... The K in gold is how pure it is. So in yellow gold a 10K ring would have say more copper in it, giving it more a burnt orange look.... With white gold they will just add more zinc/nickel/tin to it, so the silver color will look the same, it will just have about 4% less gold in it (14K vs 10K).

I do not think that you can melt yellow and convert it to white gold. I do know that if you take it to a jewel repair shop they can dip it in a solution consisting of Rhodium and it will make your yellow gold white. This is a very inexpensive way. I worked in a jewel repair shop in NY and we would charge between $5 and $10 to do it. I know this for sure cause I have done it several times and it works.
