The K in gold is how pure it is. So in yellow gold a 10K ring would have say more copper in it, giving it more a burnt orange look....
With white gold they will just add more zinc/nickel/tin to it, so the silver color will look the same, it will just have about 4% less gold in it (14K vs 10K).Question: Is it possible to melt down a yellow gold ring and have it made into a white gold ring?

I do not think that you can melt yellow and convert it to white gold. I do know that if you take it to a jewel repair shop they can dip it in a solution consisting of Rhodium and it will make your yellow gold white. This is a very inexpensive way. I worked in a jewel repair shop in NY and we would charge between $5 and $10 to do it.
