No. With regard to gold, the carat is a measure of purity. Twenty-four carat gold is pure gold (which is rather soft and not very practical as jewellery). Eighteen carat gold (sometimes stamped 750 these days, to signify 750 grammes of gold in a kilo of the alloy) is 75% pure; Twelve carat is 50%.

Well, gold is mix of metals, & depending on certain amount from each metal, carat/purity is calculated. For white gold, there r Nickel white golds & Palladium white golds.
Plating is just a finishing step, it's not gold! If u have a 12K piece, it'll always stay 12K.

Inexperience, gold rings usually have the karats stamped on the inside of the ring, viz., 10k,12k, 18k, 24k. I would not buy a ring without seeing the stamped value inside.
24k is 100%
18k = 75%
12k = 50%
