If the band is gold, it will have a stamp on the inside of the band noting the karat of gold it is made of. If it's a real diamond, depending on the quality and where he got it, it will have a laser engraved serial number. Honestly though, just be happy you got a ring.

If he didn't propose, then IMO it's safe to believe that it's a gold-plated cubic zirconium ring. I askedjeweler once if he could tell the difference between a zircon and a diamond, and he said they can't be distinguished by the naked eye. In either case, I think it's sweet that he got you something like a ring. Frankly, I think zircons are far more practical than diamonds.
