Welcome to JewelrySoupJewelry Soup: Gold Ring Jewelry. Why White Gold Ring Has Turned Yellow? Question: White gold ring has turned yellow!!!?
I have a white gold (14K is what we were told) engagement ring with diamonds. After only 3 weeks it has already began to yellow! HELP, I am so distraught over this!Answer: maybe it's rusting?

Try cleaning it. It may be picking up color from applying hand lotion, sunless tanning lotion, etc. Always take it off when applying lotion. If you don't have any jewelry cleaner mixing 1 part ammonia with 6 parts water is perfectly safe for cleaning jewelry. If it is still discolored take it to your jeweler and ask them to clean it. If it were to still be discolored and you are unhappy with it ask your jeweler why and perhaps exchange/return it. Don't delay, in most states you only have 30 days to make a return.
If they told you it's 14K, you bought it in the US from a reputable jeweler, and it's stamped 14K on the inside of the ring, then you can trust that it is.Answer: According to wt I know I can surely tell u that it's not ...
According to wt I know I can surely tell u that it's not rust because true gold don't rust. Probably wt u bought is originally a yellow gold piece which was put in a white gold bath in order to become white and so with time the original colour starts to come out again. Once I askedjewerler to makeyellow gold ring into white and that's how it was done. After a certain time the yellow started coming out again and it's normal. But NOT after 3 weeks...I think ur jewerler wasn't honest with u, u ring isn't a fully white gold one it's a yellow one put in a bath of white gold...u should go show it to another jewerler in whom u have confidence and then go to the one u bought ur ring from and show wt happened...hope that this helps...and Congratulations for ur engagement!!!Answer: I had the same concerns withring and found out that ...
I had the same concerns withring and found out that often white gold rings are dipped in rhodium to make the color more similar to platinum what your seeing is the actual white gold color coming through. All you need to do is bring it to a jeweler and for about $40 they will re-coat the surface and it will look like new. This is normal for rings but keep in mind that the lower rate gold (14k) could change quicker because of the chemical makeup. Also your body chemistry and job can play a part in early wearing of the surface. No worries just bring it to the jeweler for a new coat and you'll be good to go.Question: Where can I find a gold rose shaped ring?

I thought it was normal to get white gold rings rhodium coated every now and then but after reading Ozziegal and Nonny Mouse's answers, I am worried that my white gold ring is not very good quality at all.
What should I do? I don't want an inferior ring. I only got it coated about 3 weeks ago and it is already going bad - scratched and dull. Should I get it reset in platinum? Do you know how much it would cost for a half carat solitare diamond? Any advice?Answer: IDK anything about jewelry because im kinda of a sk8r girl. ...
IDK anything about jewelry because im kinda of a sk8r girl. Exept I dont own or know how 2 s8. I wanna!! But ODK. Fallow your heart. Pick the one u absulutely love!! Dont matter wat anyone says. Ur the one whos wearing it!! :)Answer: All white gold needs to be alloyed with either nickel or ...
All white gold needs to be alloyed with either nickel or palladium (from the platinum family). For example, if you have an 18 Kt white gold ring, it's 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts of an alloy (either nickel or palladium). The white colour depends then on the quality of your alloy. There are some pros and cons using nickel, it is very durable and if the quality (whitest nickel on the market) is great, you don't even need to rhodium plate it. However, lots of people are allergic to nickel so they often use palladium which whitest white is still not as white as nickel.
Each time your ring is scratched and turns dull, you have to rhodium coat it (in order to do so, jewellers have to sand your ring and re-coat it).
Maybe you can ask your jeweller if you can reset your ring with a better white gold content (try to get informed about their alloys, purest nickel or palladium around 95% is perfect). Or ask about pricing for platinum which colour is white naturally. However, just so you know, over time, platinum can also turn dull (this is called ''patina'' in the industry) but with a minor professional polishing, it will still look brand new.Question: Can a white gold ring turn ur finger green?

Hmmm? I'm confused. White gold doesn't normally turn your skin green. Are you sure it is white gold? Could it be sterling silver or some other alloy? Doesn't sound like gold. Good way to find out is to check with a reputable jeweler.Answer: It could be that the gold ring is only plated with gold. ...
It could be that the gold ring is only plated with gold. Perhaps her body chemistry just has a reaction to gold. Have her take her ring to a jewelry store and they will be able to tell her exactly what metal her ring is made out of.Answer: Depending on the weight of the Gold will depend if it turns ...
Depending on the weight of the Gold will depend if it turns your finger green - if the ring is say Pure mix (14K) there is 30% copper in the metal that will turn your finger green as the copper will react to the salts in your sweat. Generaly they will make a 14K ring and then cover it in 24K gold to reduce the "greening" effect. I would say if WHITE gold is turning your finger green then you are most likely hypersensitive to the copper.
Because of the softness of pure (24k) gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. Alloys with lower "k", typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 10k, contain higher percentages of copper, silver or other base metals in the alloy. Copper is the most commonly used base metal, yielding a redder metal. Eighteen carat gold containing 25% copper is found in antique and Russian jewelry and has a distinct, though not dominant, copper cast, creating rose gold. Fourteen carat gold-copper alloy is nearly identical in color to certain bronze alloys, and both may be used to produce police and other badges. Blue gold can be made by alloying with iron and purple gold can be made by alloying with aluminum, although rarely done except in specialized jewelry. Blue gold is more brittle and therefore more difficult to work with when making jewelry. Fourteen and eighteen carat gold alloys with silver alone appear greenish-yellow and are referred to as green gold. White gold alloys can be made with palladium or nickel. White 18 carat gold containing 17.3% nickel, 5.5% zinc and 2.2% copper is silver in appearanceQuestion: Is my white gold ring tarnishing...?
I tried looking it up but all I got was that most white gold rings are plated in rhodium and rhodium rarely tarnishes. What if my ring isn't rhodium plated?
My boyfriend got it re-sized about a month ago and the area that was cut and molded/melted/whatever back together is turning brown/black.
Is that supposed to happen? Is the jewelry store that re-sized it at fault? Or should I have gotten my ring appraised after my boyfriend first gave it to me?Answer: If its tarnishing he got you soomething that isn't ...

does my white gold ring becomes fake too?
what I mean by mixed is that I store them together in one box or wear them in the same finger.Answer: What do mean bye mixed? You melted it? If you did melt it ...
What do mean bye mixed? You melted it? If you did melt it then it would just have less gold in it by ratio. If you melted it with nickel ,lead, or copper it is still gold but those kind of metals corrode easily. You would have to clean it more often. Some people are allergic to those three and it would be worthless to them if they did that.Answer: nothing can turn real gold into fake gold. Storing ...
nothing can turn real gold into fake gold. Storing different items together is fine. The only damage that can be done, and it takes a while to do it, is if the items rub together too much by moving them around alot. This will only wear down the softer items but will not effect the gold purity content of the ring. |
