There is no way your ring was pure gold and turned silver. I believe that your ring is sterling silver or some other precious metal, and was overlayed in either 10 or 14 kt. I would suggest that you take it to a jeweler and let him take a look at it.

Gold is a softer metal than platinum so the gold would wear first. Best to get both metals the same so that they wear evenly. I made that mistake withwifes wedding ring and engagement ring the engagement is wearing badly

Answer: I have a yellow gold wedding ring and a solitaire engagement ...
I have a yellow gold wedding ring and a solitaire engagement ring which is a gold ring with platinum shoulders. The wedding ring is 22ct, the shank of the engagement ring is 18ct. Although the wedding ring is a softer metal there is actually wear showing on the engagement ring which is noticeably thinner on the palm side; not on the wedding ring. After nearly 50 years, I am not really surprised. Should I live long enough for it to be worrying, I can always have a small piece let into the shank of the engagement ring, but it will probably bedaughter's problem not mine. My guess is that your rings will be fine and if in 50 years one needs a little strengthening then you know that you will have made a successful marriage.

i guess, u are asking so, coz u arent in india. in india, this is known as resetting, the diamonds are cut out from the prong( if any) , used to set in same ring or another. the gold is either melted and reused, but with decreased purity of gold. there is also wastage involved in melting and remaking of a gold ring along with high labour costs. if you can find a jewelery maker in your country to do so..even I dont know how much it'll cost, but on an average, it does work better to give away the ring in exchange of new ring else give away just the gold and reset the diamonds.

Answer: Too much of the gold would disappear in the melting and ...
Too much of the gold would disappear in the melting and cooling process to be able to make another ring. Unless your current 25 diamonds are of significant weight each (think over .10 ct each) it would be cheaper to just buy a new ring. If you really want to keep the stones you have, look to spend at least $300-$600 for a setting, plus another $300-$400 for the labor involved in taking your stones out and resetting them in an eternity band...
