I saw a silver pendant with 2 coatings of 24KT GOLD plating on US ebay selling for US$5.99 each while the internationla shipment is US$4.99 flat for any number of pendants bought. Just wondering - Is 24kt gold same as 24k gold (ie pure gold)? If so, why is it so cheap? Will such gold plating resist tarnishing? how to take care of it? tks I was also told that if I want rose gold, can add another $2. I had initially thought that yellow gold is pure gold while the white or rose gold had other metal added so cheaper? The 2 coats of plating will wear it very easily? I am not really into gold but just attracted by the atique-look of the pendant due to its gold tone?

No, it is not real. Anytime you see the word "plated" or "plating", that means a really skimpy layer of real gold is on top of the other metals. It's costume jewelry. The outer layer, the "plating" will definitely come off. The way you know if something is real gold is it will say 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K, but there will be no extra words - words like plated/plating, bonded/bonding, overlay/overlayed, etc. Real gold pieces also have an imprint somewhere on them, usually the clasp (or for a ring, inside the band) indicating they are real by what company made them. You would have to get a jeweler to check it for you though. 24K is pure gold. Gold is a soft metal, so you actually want the 10K or 14K if you want durability. When I was in jewelry, I actually had people return 18K and 24K stuff because it was so soft, it would fall apart on them.
