Question: should I wear my real gold necklace to school?
my grandmother gave it to me. it has a small engraving of Mary praying. although I am atheist, I love my grandmother and I want to keep it on because I lose things. however, is it alright to wear this real gold necklace to school? it is very expensive, and i'm worried. so most of you are saying no. where will I keep it? if I dont wear it, I WILL lose it.

Okay, so my boyfriend bought me a heart locket last Christmas that is really special to me and I wear it all of the time, so now it's dirty and has lost its luster. It is not real gold, but I think it is sterling silver. It's engraved with my name also. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean it without it rusting? Should I take it to a professional cleaner, which I really do not want to do.

That means that it isn't made out of a cheap metal. What it doesn't mean is that the necklace is made of solid gold or any other precious metal. Most likely, it is some middle of the road metal that is gold plated or painted in gold leaf. I have a "gold" Harry Potter necklace and it doesn't turnneck green, but I know by the price and weight of the chain that it's only plastic or metal alloy coated in something that looks like gold. The only jewelery that will turn your skin green is jewelery that contains copper. Cheap gold jewelery can still turn your skin green if it has a very low karat rating. The lower the rating, the less pure gold there is and the more of other metals that are mixed with it. Nickel can also change skin color as well as cause a nasty rash if you're allergic.

Why don't you look at the stamp? Real gold will have a stamp (10K... 14K... 18K... 24K... and it should only be the number and a K... if there's anything else, like GP, or something, its not real... GP means gold-plated...) If there's no stamp, it's not real.
