There are 4 home remedies for spotting fake gold or just plated items that maybe marked 14k. 1st-Place a magnet next to questionable piece. If item is pulled towards magnet-it's just plated or fools gold. 2nd-Take a jewelry cleaning cloth and rub it on piece in question. This usually will take the plating right off with a couple hard rubs. 3rd-If it's a chain with lobster clasp in question, real gold will most likely be marked on the part of the clasp that moves open for other end of clasp to attach to-not the part your finger moves-the part that actually opens. 4th-Plated brass can look like solid gold until you put it in sterling silver cleaner solution. At first it looks very shiny but the next day it oxidizes and will be dull again. This doesn't happen to real gold. There are also more advanced ways to test gold like a gold test kit with a special testing stone and there are some electronic testers as well.

If you want to check of your diamond is real then yes you can take it to a jeweler... or you can get a magnifying glass or jewelers loupe. If your diamond has black spots in it or thing that look like bubbles then yes it is real. If it is over a .25 and you can not see any spots (inclusions) then no it is not real. I tried not to use any jewelers terms to make this as easy to understand as possible. If it was a very nice diamond it would be set in at least 14kt gold and then you may not see any spots but with a10kt mounting you are going to see something!!!
*Just because your diamond has inclusions doesnt mean it is not a nice ring. Most diamonds do have them unless you are planning to pay at leasst 1000 for a small diamond. It's pure gold... I understand you wanting to find out, but try not to doubt your boyfriend too much, it's the thought that counts! Though personally, for a promise ring, if he spent less than 15-20 then I'd be a bit disappointed, because it feels cheap if he buys you a ring for $2... like he was walking past a stall and picked it up.
