Because it's part of their job. As long as you are at a reputable jewlery store you have nothing to worry about. One thing I did hear about though is nail salons offering to clean your rings- NEVER let them do that! But jewelry stores are fine, it's just like a small clothing boutique offering to hold your large bags behind the counter so you don't have to hold them it's not like they are going to steal whats in your bags.

I am a jeweler by profession and the reason we (I) like to do that is for the following reasons: The customer has more time to spend in your store and while it is being cleaned they will not leave and will look at more merchandise. It's customer service to do that to compliment thier new purchase. Most times Customers ask us if we have a cleaner and we could clean it up for them. If there is anything related to jewelery I can help you with please drop me a line at kunalsc@yahoo.com

They do it for good customer service, and while they are cleaning your stuff, they can show you the "new" stuff that has come in. Also there is a better chance you won't be running off with their merchandise. It does bother me though, people go into a jewelry store and ask them to clean something they bought three years ago, you defiantly can't get a car dealer to do that free.

It's about doing more business. You shop while waiting, they may find damge to your jewelry needing repair (like loose settings, etc..), and they sell jewelry cleaner as well. Some time in the future, you will be in the market to buy some more jewelry and since they were kind enough to clean your stuff for free, they hope you will think of them at that time.

Answer: Apply concentrated lemon juice to your necklace and ...
Apply concentrated lemon juice to your necklace and bracelet. You dont have to wash or dip the entire thing in lemon juice, just a small part is okay. Leave it until the next day. If you see any discoloration, then it is not gold. The acid in the lemon reacts to the metal. If it's real gold, nothing will happen to it. You may also use lime. Sometimes, you wouldn't see the difference if it is gold plated. It will help if you make a small scratch on the inner part of the bracelet where nobody can see it. Then do the lemon test.
