I'm sorry but 9 karat is not the best quality. It is better than fake or plated gold, but it isn't very much better. 10k is the lowest you can buy here in the US and still call it gold. In fact, "nothing less than 10 karats can legally be marked or sold as gold jewelry in the U.S.," although it is more popular in other countries. 9 karat gold is only about 37.5% gold whereas the higher quality 18 karat gold is 75% gold. But, those facts aside... you bought your girlfriend a gift. One that is made with real gold. That was very nice of you, and no one who loves you will look down on you for being frugal. It is the thought that matters. You don't have to brag to her about the karats or price, just let her enjoy the meaning behind it!
