Question: Anyone ever pawned any jewelry?? I have a 1/2 carat round engagement ring that was bought for $1195.?
I went to try and pawn it and they told me they could only give me $400 for it!! Why is this? Do Pawn Shops just give you the least that they can?

Answer: Yeah, you shouldn't accept anything less than what ...
Yeah, you shouldn't accept anything less than what it's worth. Sometimes jewelers will buy jewelry, so if you have a local jewelry store that you know is good, try taking it there and see what they say. If it's worth as much as you say it is, don't accept anything less than what it's worth.

Answer: They do this because they don't want the ring; they want ...
They do this because they don't want the ring; they want to sell the ring to someone that DOES want it and use the extra money to send their kids to college. Use e-bay or craigslist to try to sell the ring to someone who actually wants it, and you will be able to get something closer to its actual value.

Answer: It depends are you pawning to sell or to get money that you ...
It depends are you pawning to sell or to get money that you are planning on paying back. Most pawn shops (it depends on local laws) will allow an individual to borrow money, using an item of value as collateral for the loan. If the loan is not paid back WITH INTEREST in a specified amount of time, the item can be sold or otherwise disposed of in accordance with the terms of the loan. On the other hand, if you sell something to a pawn shop they will sometimes give you a little more money since they don't need to hold the item until the loan expires. Most cities require that pawn shops write down the identification information about anyone who wants to pawn or sell an item in case the police discover that the item was stolen.

Answer: Yeah, and jewelry is the worst because in the jewelry store ...
Yeah, and jewelry is the worst because in the jewelry store the retail price is marked up ALOT from the actual worth in weight/karat size. General a pawn shop will pay at maximum 1/3rd of what they think they can sell the item for. And they sell it for less than you paid for it retail.

Answer: Jewelry is tricky. I am a pawnbroker. I'm genuinely ...
Jewelry is tricky. I am a pawnbroker. I'm genuinely surprised they offered you that much for a 50 point round. Loan amounts are based soley on the weight of the ring, the size and clarity of the diamond, and the appearance. It doesn't matter what you paid for it. You could bring the receipt and I wouldn't care. Why? Because jewelers inflate their prices as much as 1000% of their wholesale price. Just because you bought it for $1200 does not mean that is what it is worth. For a 50 point with an I1 or I2 clarity, I loan $150. For a 50 point with an SI1 or SI2 clarity I loan $250. For the rare VS1 or VS2 clarity, I will pay much more for, up to $500. I doubt that yours is VS1 or VS2, because if it was you'd have paid at least $6000 in a jewelry store. When you go to pawn something, you are getting a loan based on the true value of an item. Usually the loan is for 1/6 to 1/4 of the true value, depending on how badly the pawnbroker wants the item. The pawn shop you went to quoted you a steep amount. If you need the loan, I'd take it. You probably won't do any better at another pawn shop. If you are looking to sell it, don't even mess with a pawn shop. We don't buy for any more then we loan. Try craigslist or ebay. Good luck!

Question: engagement ring problem?
my fiance bought my engagement ring in Dec 07 and I've worn it for two months now. Its white gold 18ct and cost £1700. I noticed today it appears to be turning yellow! Looking online and its says all white gold is rhodium coated which does come off over time but usually worse in cheaper golds. I was not advised this when I got the ring. Rang shop who said the only thing they can do is re- coat it for £22!!! Personally I dont think its acceptable that I may have to pay £22 every few months for the rest of my life! What can I do?

Answer: that is the major problem with white gold. don't wear it ...
that is the major problem with white gold. don't wear it in hot tubs or anything because that can make the color wear off faster and turn color (i learned that when I bought a white gold ring...) go talk to a different jewerly store and see what they recommend.. I don't think you should have to keep getting it recoated

Answer: I've never heard this before! Mine I worn for about a ...
I've never heard this before! Mine I worn for about a year, and that never happened, also was a lot cheaper... EDIT - Also, I just found this site. They coat the white gold with rhodium, but this should last over a year. If you are unhappy with it lasting a lot less they should service it for free, as it was so expensive.

My daughter has white gold and she has it dipped twice a year. I have white gold, 40 years now, and I've never had it dipped, cleaned only, and it still looks great. I don't know what they're doing today. Good Luck.

Answer: You only had it for 4 months, take it back to the shop and ...
You only had it for 4 months, take it back to the shop and tell them if they don't re coat it satisfactorily free of charge you want your money back. Everything that is bought in the UK has to be fit for purpose and as they never told you that it was rhodium plated when you bought it you are within your rights to ask for a refund.

Answer: you could of got a platinum one for that price, its a much ...
you could of got a platinum one for that price, its a much tougher material and never loses its colour as, whereas gold eventually turns a straw colour, I know you might be attached to the ring but maybe sell it and go platinum. it doesn't loose its value and the price ofring keeps going up.

Your soon to be fiance is the one that does the ring shopping! It's good to give him an idea, or picture even, to let him know what you want, howerver, then you let it go and let him take care of it. It's a sign of his love for you.

Well you can never replace the value meaning of your first diamond. It depends on the diamond ring's quality, carat, size, and cut. It would be hard to determine the price without all of those.

Take your ring to a good jeweler. They can tell you if your setting will take a larger stone. Price depends on the diamond you select. If you have a jewelry rider on your insurance policy, it may cover some of the cost.
