This is always whatScience teacher says, scratch it on the side of the toilet if it scratches the diamond then its fake if the diamond scratches the toilet then its real!Answer: I know this one! You know the "sparkle" gemstones ...
I know this one! You know the "sparkle" gemstones put off when the light shines on them? Diamonds are the only clear/white/champagne stone that throws off RED sparkles. If you can see red sparkles mixed in with the other sparkles, then it is real. If you see mostly yellow sparkles, its cubic ziconium. Mostly blue sparkles and it's just cut glass. And you don't have to risk hurting the gemstone if it isn't a real diamond. If it was just a pretty crystal, cutting glass would chip it, and it would shatter with the hammer.Answer: If the gem in question is loose and unmounted, try placing ...
If the gem in question is loose and unmounted, try placing it over printing. Diamonds will not work as a magnifying glass and you would see no lines, circles, or letters through them. Other clear stones like glass or crystal will reveal the print clearly.
A similar test uses a small light, such as the one that comes with your key ring. If you shine the light through the stone and cannot see it on the other side, but only a bright halo around the rim, it is more likely to be a true diamond.
Diamonds are also very good at conducting heat. Breathe on the surface of the stone and immediately check to see if it has fogged up. You shouldn't be able to see any moisture on a true diamond. However, one rock, called moissanite, will also pass this test.
Diamonds do have inclusions, tiny bits of other minerals that got crushed into the diamond while it formed deep under the earth. However, if the facets have worn or rounded edges, bubbles, or if the gem looks rippled or pitted, it is probably glass. Those gems that are perfectly clear, with absolutely no inclusions, are probably quartz.
Although it's true that diamonds are the hardest organic substance on earth, the infamous test of scratching diamonds across glass or metal might just give you a damaged diamond.
Unfortunately, there are ways that some jewelers save money on diamonds that will make stone able to pass both of these tests. Instead of using a completely fake stone, a very small piece of real diamond will be placed on top of the fake stone. This gives the surface the hardness and resilience of a real diamond, but the majority of the "stone" is glass or some other material.
To see if your stone has simply been "topped" by a diamond, place it into a clear glass of water and look at the stone. Not only will the water magnify the stone that you're looking at, but the way that water bends light as it passes through can cause it to strike the stone differently. Imperfections in the stone that were previously unseen (such as the line where the real diamond top meets up with the glass or fake diamond stone) can become both visible and magnified in this manner.Question: how can you tell if the diamond is real?
Hi my husband came home from work and he got out of his truck and looked down and thought he saw a peice of glass and when he picked it up he thinks it could be a diamond I tryed to scratch it on my makeup mirror and it scratched it real fast. they said the fake ones also do that to. it is loose it is not in a ring. I tryed to see by putting it down on news paper and it is foggy can't see anything. and we can't get it looked at for it will cost 75 bucks to look at. so I was wondering how else we can tell if it is fake or not. I tryed breathing on it and no fog it clears fast. I cleaned it and it shines realy bright. so if anyone else has any idea please let me know. and with the magnafine glass I don't understand what you have to do with thatl thanksAnswer: how it is

If you can't afford an appraiser, take it to a pond shop and see what you can get for it. If they give you any value for it... it's worth getting it appraised as we all know a pond shop will low ball you. Good luck!Answer: Assuming the diamond is yours, the traditional way is to try ...
Assuming the diamond is yours, the traditional way is to try to cut glass with it, although this is not recommended, as it may damage the setting. The easiest way is simply to walk into any jewelry store that buys jewelry (many do) and tell them you're thinking of selling it. They will pull out a jeweler's loup, examine the stone and size it in about two minutes. If the stone is a fake, they'll tell you instantly. Just be aware that if the stone is genuine, the price they quote will be about half what you originally paid for the new ring.
If you're buying a stone from a reputable source, it should come with certification papers and you can have it appraised by another jeweler, as well. Most stores allow you to return the diamond within 3-7 days for a full refund.
If you're speculating about someone else's ring, it's difficult to impossible to be sure. Cubic Zirconias and other fakes look so convincing that people couldn't tell if Paris Hilton's megawatt stone was real or not. I'd try to judge by the person's general socioeconomic status. Someone who buys their clothes at Walmart is unlikely to be sporting a genuine five-caret stone. Celebrities and the wealthy DO wear fakes from time to time, especially to prevent theft if traveling. (If the diamond is not yours, a second question might be, why do you care if it's real?)Question: Diamond Saphirre - Is it real?
