Carat, Cut, Clarity. It is much harder to have a stone with no, or minimal flaws the larger it gets, hence it becomes more rare, and the more rare an item is, the more expensive it is. So it is much easier to get a bunch of small three point diamonds in a ring to equal 1 carat than to get a 1 carat diamond with good clarity.

I think you have it turned around. Single stone rings are usually more expensive because the larger the diamond, the higher the price. Smaller stones, but lots of them, are usually less because each diamond is less in size and weight. The higher cost of a diamond ring is due to size, clarity, color and cut of the stone. If you are finding dimonds relatively cheap it's usually because of the quality of the stone. Never buy retail for your diamonds..NEVER! The mark up on diamonds is HUGE! Never buy diamonds from a mall jeweler...find a jeweler who buys their own diamonds, like in a downtown diamond mart or jewelry mart (Los Angeles has one and so does New York).

You have several factors to consider here. In jewelry we condider both the total diamond weight of all gems in the ring, and the individual weight of the diamonds. Single diamonds are more expensive if the total (carat) weight is the same AND the quality level of the diamonds the same or similar. That is based on their cut (perfection of the cutting), clarity (inclusions, blemishes on the surface), and the color (colorless to more color, up to fancy colors). Take into account that gems from one carat on in weight jump dramatically in cost per carat. So a rong with 3 stones all together weighing 1 carat will be much less expensive as the same stone with 1 1 carat stone of the SAME color, clarity and cut. Round brilliant cuts in diamonds have a slightly higher value in the market today than other cuts (emerald, princess, ...). Good luck with your search !

You can't. Save your money for a real diamond. For $200 you can get a decent colored stone set in 10ct gold. $200 will get you a diamond chip in 14ct. You might be able to get a half way decent looking pair of earrings for $200.

Question: I lost a diamond from my ring just after having it resized they are making me pay 1/2 cost to fix is this fair

The ring is yellow gold with 3 diamonds a teardrop in the centre and a diamond on either side. The diamonds are enclosed and I dont think there would have been prongs. Just to add I only got this ring in September.

I would say that you need to look over the warranty that came with the ring. It will state of you should be charged for repairs. I'm concerned though, since you just got it back from having it re-sized, could the jeweler knocked it lose? If so, it would be hard to prove. Good luck!

That happened to me once, and I raised so much hell over it because it was within the week of being repaired. I threatened to write a blog about the company, and they finally put another stone in it. And I meant it, I was really upset and let them know I wasn't going to stop complaining until I let the president of the company know about it. Worked for me.

May I ask what kind of ring you have? How are your diamonds set? The reason I ask is, not all settings have prongs, and for many of those mountings, there is an inherent risk in resizing, as it may warp or loosen a stone's setting. Truly, once you leave the jeweler's premises, you're lucky they are willing to work with you at all on the prices. Especially if your stone is set in prongs, all you would of had to do is drop it, or knock it against something, and knock a stone out. The jeweler is not responsible for how you wear your ring, after all, so they're not responsible for any damage they occurs to it outside of their shop.

I'd go to a jeweler, you won't get as much initially but when you count the time and effort it would take it will even out.
