Welcome to JewelrySoupJewelry Soup: Diamond Engagement Ring Jewelry, Gemstone Diamond, Diamond Ring Worth Buying Question: Engagment rings w/o diamonds - where do I find them?
My boyfriend recently proposed, and we are on the hunt for a ring. I've seen one too many documentaries/news specials/movies about the horrible effects of the diamond trade on Africa and as a result, am looking for an alternative stone(s) on a ring that have virtually no risk of involving blood diamonds.
Any suggestions for websites or jewelry stores in NYC are appreciated.Answer: http://www.raru.com/rings/rings.htm

As a jeweler who sold estate jewelry, may I suggest you consider purchasing an unusual ring with either a ruby or sapphire? Diamonds have only been used as engagement stones during the past century. Prior to that, betrothal rings had all kinds of colored stones in them.
I suggested ruby and sapphire because they are both corundums and are the next toughest and durable stone to diamonds and they don't have the bad history that diamonds have. Even Princess Diana wore a sapphire for her engagement ring. Either oval or cushion cut are very nice.
I know NYC has some very well established shops that specialize in antique and estate jewelry.

ebay, because you can sell the prices more depending on the quality on the diamond. The pawnshop the buy 1/4 of the price from you.Answer: A pawn shop, and jewelry stores that do buy 'estate' ...
A pawn shop, and jewelry stores that do buy 'estate' jewelry as we call it-isn't going to pay you any amount even CLOSE to what you think it is worth.
The AVERAGE quarter carat diamond engagement ring is only worth $50 to $100 at a pawn shop...and 1 carat total weight, depends on the size of the stones...isn't going to be much more.
The wedding band-if it has no stones-maybe $15 - 20, that's all. Might be up some because I heard gold is almost at $1,000 per ounce...but if the set is mostly all 'small' diamonds-maybe a 20 pt stone and 8 smaller 10 pt stones around it...hate to tell you but even wholesale value for brand new stones-you aren't even talking $100.00
Any pawn or jewelry store is not going to buy your set as 'new' jewelry-even the store that SOLD it to you only paid 1/3 of what they charged you and maybe even LESS. So a
$1000 set they paid $250 to 350 for...bring it back to sell it back, they are only going to pay HALF of that...because it's used! They can't sell it as new, and if they want to pull the stones out and reset them-there is always the chance of breaking the stones-so they have to figure in that chance.
Diamonds DO break-very easily. It's just like glass-hit them or force a prong against the edge of a facet too hard and 'ping'...they shatter. Broke a few of them inshop trying to reset them. Your best bet is to try a weekly 'flea market' paper-free ads, but if the bands were engraved inside-that drops the value again.
Good luck! |
