A good, professional jeweller is really the only reliable way. Many jewellers have electrical conductivity test equipment, which can indicate with a high degree of probability whether a stone is diamond. However, even this is not foolproof as some modern diamond simulants have electrical conductivity properties that are very similar to those of diamond. A thorough jeweller will make an appraisal based not only on electrical testing, but also professional knowledge of the appearance of a true diamond under optical magnification.

Question: My adorable fiance gave me a diamond ring for Valentine's... but...?
Its ENORMOUS. Its 3 and a half carat and has clustered diamonds on both sides of the rock. Its white gold and today is my first day wearing it. Everyone here at work is in shock with the ring and it's size. I am too. The problem is... I am not rich, I have jewlery but Ive never had jewelry that was this expensive. I feel weird about having this ring on my tiny skinny finger. I feel insecure about it too. I dont want to lose it and alot of things go by my mind. I know alot of girls who would die to have this type of ring, but I am more simple. Dont get me wrong, I love diamonds, but I just feel that its too enourmous for my hand. What should I do?

I just got engaged in November....just be happy about the ring small or large. It's the thought and the commitment that counts. Congratulations. Doesn't matter if your rich or not. He save (or financed) to show how much he really loves you. Be proud. It will grow on you and I doubt you will lose it because you will think about it all the time. I am very forgetful and the one thing I think about ALL THE TIME isring. I am always feelingfinger to make sure that it is there...my fiance would be devasted and prolly a little suspicious if I lost it. Have Fun Wedding Planning!!!!

Answer: Enjoy it with all your heart! Your fiance loves you and did ...
Enjoy it with all your heart! Your fiance loves you and did this for you. If though, it's not an engagement ring (which it sounds like it could be but might not be?), then tell your fiance you may not be comfortable wearing it to work all the time. If it is super big for your hand you feel uncomfortable wearing something that perhaps may not 'suit' the look of your hand size, then talk to your fiance and be open with him. Assure him that you love it and think it's beautiful but kindly explain your feelings. I'm sure he'll understand and then maybe you can both go and see what a professional jeweller will recommend for your hand size. But I bet it really is gorgeous and not as big as you think...Sure you might not be used to it. But that's the whole point with an engagement ring (or a special ring from your loved one). It is supposed to be different from everything else you own. All the best.

be happy with what you have. there are some people who aren't fortunate enough to even have a ring at all. there are some people who aren't as fortunate to have such a kind and sweet boyfriend. there are some people who didn't get anything for valentines day. appreciate what you have, for it could be gone tomorrow.

Your fiance gave it to you out of love I am guessing, so I am also guessing that he thought it would please you and look good on you. It sounds gorgeous! He must trust you. don't worry about it. if you got it flaunt it! you said that a lot of girls would love to have it so be one of those girls! Just take it and LOVE IT.

Answer: I would feel the exact same way. I would be touched at such ...
I would feel the exact same way. I would be touched at such an amazing gesture, but still too big is too big. If it was me what I would do is only wear it onfinger to places that a little more fancy things is normal. But like to work I would wear it aroundneck on a nice chain. And you could get different chains with different lengths so you could decide each day how much you wanted it to show. If you still can't decide what to do I would talk to someone who really knows you're fiancé, to see what they think. I hope you figure out what to do, that?s tough.

Take it to a jewellers they will use ultrasonic sound waves to clean it and it will come out looking like new. My family own a jewellers shop so I should know! a soft toothbrush and toothpaste powder. If there are any opals or pearls in this ring DO NOT GET IT WET, as they are porous and any moisure will affect them. Be carefull cleaning around the claws that hold the stones in. If there are are no pearls or opals in the ring, give it a good rinse under the tap after you have cleaned it. Avoid wearing it when washing up , applying handcream or handling greasy food as diamonds attract grease and oil and it will coat them and make them dull and lose their sparkle. Inside the ring there will be hallmarks (characters and letters)which give the quality of the gold, date it was made, place it was made etc, if you can see these e-mail me with them and I'll tell you what they mean.
