A jeweler is probably the best person to make the determination. Although there is the old "scratch the glass to cut it" test- there are plenty of rocks out there that will scar glass, and it won't tell you if you have a man-made diamond. That technically is a diamond, chemically speaking- but doesn't have the same value as a natural one. A trained gemologist or jeweler will be able to tell the difference in just a few minutes of inspection. Most won't even charge to look, and you will have your answer.Answer: I dunno

Well, this is where it comes down to appropriate "terms".
In the jewelry field, the word "simulated" means a stone that is similar to another, but not necessarily the same composition.
Example: A "CZ" or Cubic Zirconia is a simulant of a Diamond. They look similar, but both are unique stones and of different chemical composition
A "Synthetic" Stone is a stone that is the same chemical composition and has all the same characteristics, but has been cultured or "grown" in a controlled environment ( lab ).
And yes, there are Synthetic Diamonds. They are not widely available on the Jewelry market scene, but they do exist. MOstly used for industrial purpose because the process to create them is costly.
Other Diamond "Simulants" include:
1) Moisanite
2) White Sapphire
3) Clear Quartz
4) Swarovski Crystal
5) GosheniteQuestion: How can you tell the difference between a fake diamond and a real one???

It is hard to see difference if you do not have tools and if you don't know much about them. The only thing you can do, just to check if it is diamond or not, but not to check clarity, is to take a glass and press this "diamond" against it and try to draw line. Then check the stone. It should not have any damage or marks. Also on the glass you should see deep cut.Answer: Generaly I charge to show this technic but I will tell you, ...

Real diamonds are locked away in people's safes, safety deposit boxes, bank vaults, etc, where no one ever sees them, wears them or enjoys them.
Fake diamonds, depending on lighting, quality, the person wearing them, etc., are what people are actually wearing.Answer: While it is true that a real diamond will scratch glass, if ...
While it is true that a real diamond will scratch glass, if the diamond is in a setting (eg. a ring) you probably won't have enough of an edge exposed to try the scratch test.
A better, more reliable, and still FREE way to acurately test the stone is to go to a jeweler. Most any jeweler (pawn shops too) can test for a diamond using an electric pen-type instrument. It takes a second - just make sure the stone is clean first. If it's dirty, you could get a false negative.Answer: Do does quartz, and cubic zircon , look like diamonds to the ...

Simple. Price, Color, Shine & Cut.
Real diamonds reflect light whether it be at/ under natural or artificial lighting.
They have a clear color unlike fake diamonds that are just normally cubic zirconias.
Generally with anything that's authentic, they come with warranty or a certificate to prove this.
A fake diamond does not perform as well as a real one due to the cut which is what real diamonds are known for.
An evaluation by a licensed jeweller would be best to determine the genuineness of diamonds.Answer: If it is big enough, turn it upside down on top of something ...
If it is big enough, turn it upside down on top of something with red on it, or a red line, like a Winston cigarette package, and if you can see the red through from the back side it is not a real diamond.
A real diamond will reflect the color back to the top and you will not see the red where it touches the next color..
Cubic Z s have silicone and will attract dust quite quickly and need cleaning often. If I remember right a Cubic Z will also reflect the color green from the top where a real diamond will not.
Not sure as it has been a long time since I worked in a jewelery store.
Cubic Zs will also show wear on the edges and get scratches on the top table as it gets older. |
