you can tell a real diamond from a fake one like this: a fake (cubic zirconia) looks like you can see the 'bottom' of the stone when you look down into it---a diamond --a real one--looks bottomless. plus the cut of a diamond is not deep---a cube will be 'taller' from top(the table) to bottom (the bottom point). clean the necklace in vinegar and baking soda---let it soak and then rinse using a tooth brush---real diamonds have 'fire' (very intense colors of the rainbow-especially in sunlight),clean or not---and real diamonds almost always have a flaw or dark spot somewhere----look using a magnifying glass. tell us how big the diamonds are--in comparison to a pea or a the head of a pin or something--if they are so small, they are probably real but of not so great quality. you could go to a jeweler--or a pawn shop---they will know for sure.Answer: if the diamonds are supposed to be real..
the chances ...
if the diamonds are supposed to be real..
the chances are zero to nil that there's just "one fake diamond" in the necklace.
they're either all real, or all fake.
There's just no benefit to having a few of each..
but anyways, what you are seeing is a quality difference.
The one that looks milky has many "inclusions" (natural clarity characteristics)......... which have bearing on how the diamond is going to look to your naked eye, along with how its going to look under magnification.
You should take your item to a reputable jeweler and have them stick it under a microscope for you and explain what people in the diamond industry call "the 4 c's" which are the basic guidelines for buying diamonds.
it'll help you familiarize yourself with diamond qualities and then next time around when you and your boyfriend are out buying diamonds it will be a more rewarding experience.
good luck and congratulations on your new necklace. =)Question: Whats the differences between real diamonds and fake ones?

STEP 1: Ask if the stone is a genuine diamond ...
Instructions
STEP 1: Ask if the stone is a genuine diamond or if it is a cubic zirconia, moissanite or other synthetic substance. A reputable jeweler will give you an honest answer. STEP 2: Look at the setting and mount. Since stones such as cubic zirconia are so much cheaper than diamonds, they are sometimes set in inferior metals. STEP 3: Check the wear and tear on the stone. A cubic zirconia is not as durable as a diamond and may show signs of scratches or nicks. STEP 4: Take the stone to a trusted jeweler. Looking through a jeweler's loupe, he or she should be able to spot a fake stone right away. If the jeweler cannot tell by examining the stone, he or she will have instruments that can verify its authenticity. STEP 5: It is highly recommended that you obtain a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The GIA, the largest impartial diamond grading authority in the world, issues a grading report after it examines the diamond and details it specifications. STEP 6: Have the stone appraised by an independent appraiser who is affiliated with a professional organization such as the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). Ask for a certificate indicating the value and characteristics of the stone. Tips & Warnings
If a cubic zirconia is mounted in a high-quality diamond mount made of 18-karat gold or platinum, you are not likely to be able to spot the fake diamond unless you're an expert.
These days, some of the best imitation diamonds are made of moissanite. This substance, which didn't come on the market until 1998, so closely resembles a diamond that even experts have a hard time telling the two stones apart without a special instrument. Moissanite sells for about one-tenth the price of diamonds.
When purchasing "diamonds" online or buying stones you have not seen or had independently appraised, make sure the sale is accompanied by a grading report provided by an independent lab like the GIA. When you do make a purchase, get everything in writing.Answer: brightness
