Welcome to JewelrySoupJewelry Soup: Beaded Jewelry Question: fibromyalgia/cfs Jewelry/beading/craft friends needed!!!!?
i have been looking into jewarly making I have come across so many people that have fibromyalgia and Cfs and being disabled aswell there are many professional jewarly designers that have fibro and cfs aswell so I think I will give it ago
i have had fibromyalgia for over 15 years and am only 27 years old well I will be next Sunday ah nearly 30 years old going to cry in the corner Just Jk am a Big tease!!
Well I have been trying to find something that I can do that will not cause fibromyalgia pain to flare up as am sooooo BORED do u know how I feel your sick but bored like heck!!
i have a passion for 3d/sculpting crafts/art but I have tried paper mache. salt dough. large clay modeling and I just fall on my face with so much pain!!! I have been doing this for like all my life and its killing me in pain and as a person right now so am giving it up!! I cant take it any longer..
i was really getting up set about it all as we all do its natural I hope lol
and then I saw lovely jewelry as well and making jewelry and beading has never cross my mind ever ever until I saw the wonderful things people are making u can found them on my space and now I cant stop looking at them and thinking about them they are so cute!!
i bet I sound so sad!! OK I used to make my own beads from SALT DOUGH when I was a teen and I loved making them and I even wear them all the time I bet that sounds SO sad to you all
Now I have no clue how to start and how to make them and what I need!! I haven't make jewelry ever only like over 10 years ago and that wasn't real jewelry as I used tights cut up to but them around my neck lol
Am really looking for fellow fibromyalgia/Cf's beaders jewelry makers to become friends with!! does beading/ making your own beads/ jewelry making make your fibro flare up at all? and can u do it everyday with it killing you?Huh? is there short cuts to make so it dont causes pain?Answer: I wish you much success with your endeavor. I wish you much success with your endeavor. I'll pass on a few sites you might wish to explore further:
http://beadjournalproject.blogspot.com/2007/05/intro.html A blog that was begun this year 241 members, the owner has FMS and a number of other health afflictions...you may find many like minds here.
Not FMS related although some posters/readers/beaders do have the illness: http://cs.beadandbutton.com/bnbcs/tags/jewelry/default.aspx more geared towards patterns, tips, techniques etc. (Magazine avail on news stands everywhere)
This is a great support board for FM'ers including those into beading: http://www.fibrohugs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=40&showtopic=3682 lots of support and friendly posters.
Another board, support for beaders, some with FMS and other illnesses as well: http://forums.bellaonline.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=400
A large resource for beading, includes info on FMS beaders: http://www.wwwearables.com/techniques/beading_stitches.htm
Might I also suggest a computer program such as one of the following to set up on your computer and help you regulate breaks so that you don't get lost in the creative zone for far longer than your body can handle being there: http://www.download.com/Scirocco-Take-a-Break/3000-2350_4-10363748.html
Desk (sitting) stretches: http://www.shelterpub.com/_fitness/_desk_stretches/stretches_graphic.html (Gentle stretching is an absolute must for those with FMS)
...and a few other programs...http://reminds.qarchive.org/
As for beading and dealing with FMS...only you will know how well you will deal with this type of activity. As a creative mind who also deals with FMS among other physical issues, I too found that I had to give up some of the things I loved to do...but then I decided to learn the art of pacing...although it never really goes quite as I would like as I get involved and don't wish to stop ... it does help to make what you wish to create...a little more manageable, albeit in smaller, bite sized pieces.
Weather, stress, sleeping the wrong way, being too active, not active enough, diet etc., etc., all play roles in how we feel and how we deal...
I'd recommend taking in a local support group in your area as well if you don't already...provided that they aren't one that is a less than helpful one (i.e. lots of woe is us going on...that's not good). Also, check out Fire Mountain Gems (online) http://www.firemountaingems.com/ for lots of ideas and some decent prices on beads, findings, tools etc. Free catalog and it's large! There are also a number of other places to look just do a search and you'll locate numerous other sites to assist.
Best of luck with this...as one FM'er to another...the creative arena is a great place to be but only if not overdone.
Take care!Comment from :

I need to find a pic or a name or smthng that can help me find this necklace. Its doesnt dangle and is pretty tight around your neck, not that tight, but u have to unhook it to put it on. It has white shells or smthng like that, small circular white things on it and black beads and maybe red. It pretty common, exspecially around beachers and among surfers. Please help me, maybe a link to a pic of one would help. I understand its hard to understand what im talking about so a pic would help.

puka shells =)Answer: Puka Shell necklace...
Puka shells are pieces of a Cone ...
Puka Shell necklace...
Puka shells are pieces of a Cone Snail shell. Puka is the Hawaiian word for "hole" and refers to the naturally occurring hole in the middle of the shell fragment.
As the name implies, the shell of the Cone Snail is cone-shaped, being closed at the larger end. While the abandoned shell is tossed in the surf and coral rubble, the pointed end is ground into sand. The "puka" is formed when the minor apex of the large end is eroded by the same forces that wears off the point.
As legand has it puka shells inusred a peacefull and safe voyage on a long journy for sailors and their crews. So in effect everyone wanted theses necklaces for themselves wich turned out harder than immagened for the puka shell is extreamly hard to find, although many immitations now exist it takes a keen eye to spot the fakes from the real ones.
Necklaces, bracelets and anklets are a perfect use of the "shells" because they already have a hole for stringing. Puka jewelry first became popular in Hawaii, though many species of Cone Snail are found throughout the Indo-Pacific ocean and in all tropical oceans world-wide.
Puka shell jewelry used to be fairly expensive due to the labor involved in collecting enough naturally formed "shells" for a suitable string. Currently the Cone Snail shells are often harvested and other types of shells may also be used for faux puka jewelry.
Authenticity may be determined by simple observation. An overtly glossy patina indicates the shells have been tumble polished. If the edges are chipped, the shells were harvested and manually broken into shape. If the "puka" is perfectly circular, then the hole was assuredly drilled.
